It is just as important for a World of Warcraft gold guide to teach you what you need not do as it is for it to tell you what you should be doing to get gold in Cataclysm. First off, I will disclose the most important pitfall that a lot of people are going to make when playing in WoW Cataclysm.
If you need to make gold in Cataclysm, do not waste your time mining Elementium or harvesting Cinderbloom after the first few weeks of Cataclysm’s release. The largest problem with these materials is that there are just too many spawn points in Cataclysm. This is entirely different from the previous two expansions where the veins were well-distributed and quite hard to find.
More information can be found in this wow cataclysm gold guide as well as inside this Cataclysm Retribution Paladin Changes article.
I ended up finding over 50 obsidian ore spawn points as well as a large number of herb spawn points by flying around the Cataclysm areas for just a couple of minutes. This may seem like good news at first, but the chance of oversupply is going to be very real. The auction house will be overrun with auctions for ore and herbs; as soon as players get level 85 these materials will be nearly worthless. There are just way too many ore nodes and as a consequence, supply will dominate demand.
Whenever the supply of an item surpasses the demand of that item, prices drop. In Cataclysm, gamers will discover that the accessibility of ore and herbs will result in such large volumes of supply that herbalists will be struggling to make ends meet. One way to avoid this problem is to mine Obsidian (the tier 1 ore) as this ore does not have nearly as many spawn points as Elementium. Furthermore, the Azshara’s Veil herb is also much rarer than the other Cataclysm herbs.
Two more ways you can make gold in Cataclysm are by skinning and farming. By gathering the new varieties of scales, skinners will be able to supply the raw materials for the new armor enchants, which are guaranteed to be expensive. There are a variety of diverse locations you can farm Black Dragonscales in the game, but the bottom right corner of Twilight Highlands contains a dense forest with only Black Dragonkin, making it the perfect place to collect these items.
In addition to black dragons, players will find a variety of elemental creatures in the Twilight Highlands. Players can kill these elementals in order to collect tons of the new volatile elementals. Since the need for these items will be so high, you can sell them for a lot of gold. If former versions are any predictor of what kinds of material will be valuable, I would bet that the fire and air varieties will be worth the most.
To wrap up this WoW Cataclysm guide, just remember that farming Elementium is a bad idea in Cataclysm and that you would be best sticking to lower tiers of ore if you want to make gold from mining.
