Since the time that the first PSP was introduced, what has captured the interest of many individuals isn’t the games that it offers, but instead its PSP UMD movie capability. Just consider that there are more of these movies available than there are games and other PSP stuff. Then there is the popularity of converter software programs such as PSP Movie Creator that can convert other formats to something that can be watched on your console.

However by early 2006, sales of PSP UMD movies and other similar products had decreased so much that the big manufacturers were slashing their production, selling the movies at a lower price and even giving them away. What was the reason for this unexpected drop in sales? The reason is quite simple really. What’s occurring is that people started downloading their PSP movies from the internet, just like they download other audio and video files. Why pay good money for something that is freely available online?

The manufacturers of these digital PSP UMD movies obviously didn’t see this coming. The same thing occurred in the music industry when people started downloading songs, for which there were lots of free sources. There are now so many sites where you can get pirated copies of PSP UMD movies that it has affected the production of the physical product.

Manufacturers tried to deal with the situation by selling special editions and lowering their prices. A few producers even tried to set up sites where they charge a modest fee for streaming these movies. But it hasn’t made much difference to those who simply don’t want to pay for their entertainment.

There is no shortage of sites on the internet where a movie can be converted to PSP format and downloaded. And in conjunction with this easy accessibility to free movie downloads, there are also conversion programs you can purchase that make it simpler than ever to convert movies you already own into UMD format. This is not strictly legal, but that does not stop most individuals. And of course these files are shared freely on the internet. With these kinds of choices, what’s the point of purchasing them when they can be found at no cost?

The only solution to this dilemma would be to have an online watchdog agency that traces these unlawful downloads. This could be something that the big manufacturers would like to be involved in. As well, there needs to be stronger enforcement of the laws against pirated copyright material. But it is much simpler to talk about this than to do anything about it. If the situation worries you, you can do your part by purchasing your PSP UMD movies rather than “borrowing” them.
