Babies Movie Violates California Child Labor Law, Some Claim

“Babies,” the documentary movie by Thomas Balmes, is a chronicle of the lives of four infants from varying backgrounds. No dialogue is present, but strains of upbeat music score scenes of the children in the care of their families. Reviews of “Babies” have been somewhat mixed; while the 80-minute Focus Features documentary is undoubtedly cute, it may lack substance. Cute little babies moving in time to music is the domain of 30-second commercials, not serious films. The “Babies” movie has been gaining less plot attention and more noise for claims that the product may have violated child labor laws (and may need payday lending to dig their way out from under a potential mountain of fines).

Were the ‘Babies’ in the movie exploited?

“Babies” baby Hattie from San Francisco may not have been used in ways California law deems proper for infants, reports USA Today. In that state, infants must be at least 15 days old and have a doctor’s note and legal permits before they can be filmed commercially. Said “Babies” in the movie are only allowed on film a maximum of 20 minutes per day, and during that time the studio must provide a nurse and teacher which the studio finances completely. In the case of the “Babies” movie, critics claim they didn’t follow the rules with little Hattie.

Film’s producer said those rules did not apply

The producer’s actual reason was much less standoffish. In actuality, “Babies” producer Amandine Billot informed the Associated Press that the children were cast while still unborn. The children were then filmed “in their natural environments, like a wildlife film of human babies,” according to Billot. The California Labor Board has not officially opened an investigation into the “Babies” movie, but if they do, potential fines could range from $ 50 to $ 5,000 per infraction.

Blame it on California

California certainly needs money, so they could easily decide to go after the film. CEO James Schamus is ready for a fight, however. He called the allegations against the “Babies” movie “irresponsible conjecture,” reports the AP. Schamus underscored that “the filmmakers more than adhered to both the letter and spirit of the law”.

Not all the “Babies” reviews are negative. Rob Lowe Ended Up Being Killed On The Brothers And Sisters Season Finale 2010

As spring draws to closer to a close, TV shows often have their final episode until fall, and the big question about the “Brothers and Sisters” season finale 2010 was what is going to happen with Rob Lowe. Brat Packer supposedly didn’t like the series anymore and wanted off the show. His character ended up being killed off. It isn’t as if Rob Lowe will need a loan until payday though, because he’s already landed a gig on Parks and Recreation.

The 2010 season finale of Brothers and Sisters was sad considering Rob Lowe’s character died. Senator Robert McCallister will no longer be in the show except in possible flashbacks. The other big shocker was Saul Holden, the brother to the clan matriarch Nora Walker, is HIV positive. Next season is likely to bring just as much drama. The plot will resume 12 months in after the events of the season finale when the show picks up again in the fall.

Off to ‘Parks and Recreation’ is Rob Lowe

Rob Lowe is looking for Greener Pastures as he is unsatisfied with his Brothers and Sister role. He is now a part of the Parks and Recreation cast and made his first appearance on May 13. It is still unclear whether he is going to be a regular character or guest. This comedy, modeled after The Office, was picked up for a third season. He seems to be one of the few Brat Pack alumni left standing, as others have almost fallen off the map or settled for occasional roles. He can hold his own in comedic roles very well, as he featured in some very funny films such as “Wayne’s World,” the Austin Powers movies and “Thank You For Smoking.”

Critics Not Entirely Blown Away By MacGruber

There had been MacGruber movie rumors for a while, and now it’s in theaters. The parody Saturday Night Live ran of MacGyver had been a fan favorite, but the critics aren’t overwhelmed. It will be duking it out with Shrek Forever After for box office supremacy. Reviews for both have been somewhat positive, but mostly lukewarm.

After the wildly popular skits and Super Bowl spots, MacGruber is now a feature film. This SNL related film will be competing for fast cash from the box office against a film with an SNL alumnus, Mike Meyers, in the lead role. Like the 1980s action heroes the film lampoons, MacGruber has the hairstyle featuring business in the front, and party in the back. The target audience may be too young, though, to remember MacGyver or similar characters, like the hero from John Carpenter’s masterpiece, They Live. Kurt Loder is not amused, though the Rotten Tomatoes page on MacGruber gives it a rating slightly over 50 percent.

No more Shrek sequels forever after Shrek Forever After

There won’t be another Shrek Forever After this sequel. Rotten Tomatoes has bestowed a 51 percent Fresh rating, which is not very flattering, but it is a sequel. Sequels can easily deflate a series, though some franchises are just lame in the crib to begin with. (Transformers comes to mind.) However, it would appear that this final installment has one thing going for it, which is 3D. It might be at least interesting visually.

Chances are we already know what we’re in for with MacGruber, as we’ve all seen the MacGruber trailer by now. It will be lowbrow, but it may be funny. It seems SNL movies just aren’t what they used to be, but considering that they’ve had several flops to every success, a quality SNL film is a rare bird. The new Shrek film, like many other movies these days, is relying on 3D to sell it. Just because the visuals are great, doesn’t mean the rest of a film is up to par. Unfortunately, most people think that 3D makes anything great.

Movie Review Of The Princess And The Frog

This gorgeous movie, animated in a rare 2-D style, takes place in New Orleans at the time of the Great Depression and highlights Disney’s first African American heroine.  In the story, Tiana meets a frog who is really a prince.  He convinces her to kiss him, hoping the kiss will restore him to his original princely form.  In exchange for her kindness, he gives his word that he will help her attain her lifelong goal of having her own restaurant.

The strategy backfires and Tiana becomes a frog herself!  The two are sent on a wild journey through the Louisiana Bayou in search of a witch doctor, the only one who can return them back into human form.  However, time is of the essense!  If they don’t undothe spell in time, the prince and Tiana will remain frogs forever.

They stumble upon crazy characters along the way, including a Cajun butterfly, an alligator who plays the trumpet and a blind old lady who lives in a boat in a tree.  Collectively they make their way to the Voodoo Queen who lives deep in the Bayou.  She is the only one who can undo the wicked hex and turn Tiana and her prince friend back into humans.

In the meantime, the evil Doctor Facilier, the man who put the spell on the frogs in the first place, learns that the two are searching for the queen so he heads off to stop them.  To get extra assistance, Dr. Facilier enlists the help of the Voodoo spirits and tells them that if they capture Tiana and the prince, he will give them all the souls in New Orleans.

The movie is beautifully animated in an old, classic style and has unforgettablemusic that will stick with you long after the movie is over.  The well-developed and interesting characters will find friends with audiences of any age.  With this movie as Disney’s first movie of “color,” there is no gratuitous stereotypes to offend anyone of any color; it is believable and tastefully done.

I’m not sure this will go down as a Disney classic but it’s certainly a nice addition to have in the family movie collection.  You’ll love the music, and the unusual animation will quickly grow on you.This movie is no technical slouch, either.It was nominated for three Academy Awards, one for Best Animated Feature Film and two for the Best Original Song.

There’s no other Disney film quite like it but if you’re a parent of movie buffs, you’re sure to approve of this one!
